Second train today

Hawke's Bay Today - - LOCAL NEWS -

A second work train is expected on the NapierWairoa line today.

The train will head out of Napier and make its way to Eskdale at some point during the day.

After a six year delay, the first work train carrying ballast returned to the line last Wednesday following an official opening ceremony in Ahuriri attended by Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones.

Earlier this year, the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) committed $5 million to KiwiRail to reopen the line for logging trains which would help take more than 5000 trucks off the road each year.

Two to three trains a week are expected to be running on the line within 12 months.

Because it has not been in use for six years KiwiRail has been reminding people to take care around the line.

The line was mothballed in 2012 after a section of track at the Beach Loop area was badly damaged in a storm earlier that year.
