Quilters show work

- By Kay Bazzard

Every year the Keirunga Quilters show their work at the Havelock North Function Centre with this year’s exhibition running from August 4-12.

The group normally meets at Keirunga Gardens in Havelock North and the exhibition is an opportunity for local quilters to invite in the public to see and enjoy the range of work produced by members.

The exhibition includes several award winning quilts made by Joanne Farmery, Barbara Harder and Ros Lusk, alongside this year’s quilt challenge of a Traditional Quilt Block — made with a twist. The quilts will be judged and prizes awarded for first and second place. Other hand-made goods will also be on sale during the exhibition and there will be a raffle for a quilt or a basket of goodies as the choice of prizes.

This year the Keirunga Quilters are raising funds for Heart Kids Hawke’s Bay, with a Christmas tree decorated with hand-made ornaments — the proceeds of sale going to Heart Kids https://heartkids.org.nz/

The Keirunga Quilters group was formed in 1979 and is part of the Keirunga Gardens Arts and Crafts Society.

The group currently has more than 50 members meeting on three days a week, bringing together people mad about quilting who enjoy the company, exchange information and become inspired by the craft.

The group also organises outings for members and works on individual and group projects for charity, for example, Heart Kids as this year, KidsCan and William Colenso College Teen Mum unit. Another project close to the heart of president Bev Bosenberg is the lap quilt project for the elderly.

“It’s a lovely project, we take them to our local retirement home and give them to the ladies — we like to think it is a special gift for people who may not have a lot of family contact.”

Visitors and new members are very welcome. For more information please contact Bev Bosenberg bevbose@gmail.com or Do Adams doandgary@gmail.com.
