No need to close pools
Flaxmere’s swimming pools will not close for maintenance over summer.
For a couple of weeks over each of the last two summers Swim Heretaunga had to close for resurfacing of the pools and pump maintenance. However, the Hastings District Council says with everything up to date, there is no need to close this year.
If programmed maintenance that requires emptying the pools has to be done, it is done in summer when the district’s outdoor pools in Frimley and Havelock North are open, said the council’s community and facilities group manager, Alison Banks.
“We do it that way so that people at least have the option of heading to Frimley Pool, which is the closest to Flaxmere. The plan is always to keep the pools open, as we know how much people enjoy them, but occasionally we do have to empty the pools.”
The news that there was no planned shutdown of the pools was very welcome, said councillor Henare O’Keefe.
“The kids love the place, and, while I know we do have to keep the maintenance upto-date to keep it running well long-term, it is great that over this year’s summer holidays we look to be open all the way through.”
The only shutdown would be if something happened with the plant that required an unscheduled repair, said Banks. “But we are confident that the major work done over the past two years and the regular maintenance that has been able to be done without emptying the pools, has given us the very best chance of being able to be open over the full season.”
