● How can it be? 91 petrol is seven cents a litre cheaper in Waipawa, Waipukurau, Dannevirke and Woodville than Napier and Hastings? It can't be due to freight costs as I believe it comes from Napier Port? Guy

● More empty tables than customers outside the cafe in the photo didn't support the accompanying article ( Hawke’s Bay Today, July 30) proclaiming a tourism increase. Also, were the customers actually tourists and not locals?

● Thank you, Dave Hales, for raising the issue of the Napier library. Can council please respond to this letter? mp

● Dear Nixon of Dock Green: the common denominator for arguments, fights, stabbings, divorce, domestic abuse, rapes, theft, fatal car accidents, abuse of St John's and A&E nurses, addiction and brain damage is a legal drug called alcohol. I now support decriminalising cannabis. Geo

● We are wanting to be smoke-free, so why would we want to legalise smoking cannabis? It is a nobrainer.

● Congratulations, Clive rugby club. Maddison Cup men’s and women’s finals wins, both by good margins. Well done, the Riversiders.

● The $1 billion this Government has given to the Pacific Islands and Swedish Embassy is 38.5 times greater than the $26 million spent by Sir John Key on the flag referendum. The $1b would certainly have gone a long way to covering the nurses’ grievances and all the others yet to come. Please come back, John.

● The way I read it regarding cannabis is the Government is not making it legal but decriminalising it. This means instead of jail you would be warned or get an infringement, like a speeding ticket. I stand to be corrected.

● Excellent letter from Tom Johnson. Well-reasoned arguments. Who today is “right thinking”? Who is it that decides who is “right thinking” — Goff? Unless we continue to debate these issues with reason and logic we will all become easily herded sheep. DLH

● Thank you for the fairytale story about Te Mata Peak. I’m looking forward to the next fable. ER

● Re the letter from Peter Harris, July 31: totally agree, Peter, the council treats us like bottomless pits and provides endless cost blowouts. Incompetence at its best. Where are all the millions it is making from Parkland section sales? GW Thank you for texting in your views.
