Rain set to descend on region at weekend

Forget getting out and about this weekend — Hawke’s Bay’s sunshine is set to end and heavy rain is due tomorrow evening.

MetService meteorologist Tom Adams says it will start raining this afternoon and will continue through the weekend, with the heaviest rain tomorrow evening and lasting throughout Sunday.

“When the wind turns east through east, that’s when you are going to get it the worst,” Adams said.

“That’s later on Saturday when that’s going to happen, and then through to Sunday.”

The rain will be easing just in time to return to work on Monday.

“It’s still going to be wet on Monday but it will be an easing trend, before things dry out on Tuesday,” Adams said.

The West Coast, on the other hand, might be getting battered by rain now but come the weekend people would be trading the umbrellas for sun block.

“Basically, when the wind is from the west it’s generally wet in the west. Wen the wind is from the east it’s wet in the east,” Adams said.

Despite the rain, temperatures would remain in the mid-teens.

“You’re not going to get any sunshine, so it’s not going to feel super warm — but it’s not like we’re getting one of those cold southerlies coming through,” Adams said.

“Temperatures are going to stay pretty warm, in the mid- teens or so. All this moisture and rain is coming down from the north, where it’s warm, not the cold stuff from the south.”

It might be a good weekend to get some reading done for the Hasting District Libraries Adult Winter Reading Challenge, which is in its final two weeks.

The library has set out 12 challenges, and completing enough of them puts you in the draw for prizes such as book vouchers and movie vouchers.
