All of us should keep ‘topping the tossers that tip’

-

I feel the latest reports of littering is the tip of the iceberg.

Whether it is laziness or an inability to pay dump fees, we can’t leave this to multiply in years to come.

I’m sure the council does what they can but every individual can help to stop this unacceptable behaviour by picking up what we can and “topping the tossers that tip”.

Maybe bigger fines need to be introduced.

Some people say it is laziness — maybe in some cases but in Hastings orange rubbish bags cost $15, which for some is a big cost out of weekly budgets.

Here are some of the photos I have taken in a year and these are just on my route to work.

Chlorination paranoia

Bruce Bisset [3/8/18] has challenged councils to “come clean and tell your citizens exactly why you continue to do what you don’t need

to”. I can tell you why Napier’s water is chlorinated. It’s because an overly sensitive test at the reservoir in Enfield Road on Hospital Hill in February 2017 indicated there might be E.coli present.

That test was “on the edge of detection”.

Result — insufficient evidence of any contamination, meanwhile we got chlorinated anyway.

One month later the same overly sensitive test was used at the Taradale reservoir. It also indicated there “might” be contamination. Again they found that any contamination was “on the edge of detection”. Again we got chlorinated.

The mayor and his CEO are now so risk-averse they are hell-bent on continuing to chlorinate our drinking water. Council has committed $10 million of ratepayer money to their project which includes “state of the art” treatment plants and ongoing costs of the chemicals.

It’s time we returned to a more reliable testing regime using a measure of 10ppm instead of the 1ppm test which is on “the edge of detection”.

Let’s put an end to the paranoia. Guardians of the Aquifer has started a petition for chlorine-free water. (abridged)
