Trial by jury
One of the women charged with kidnapping an 87-year-old man from a Hastings supermarket and robbing him five weeks ago has pleaded not guilty and elected trial by jury. Pleas were entered when Kahurangi Waerea, 35, appeared in Hastings District Court yesterday by audio-visual link from prison, now remanded in continued custody pending the next appearance in November. Charges relate to the abduction of retired businessman and orchardist David Geor, who was forced into his car on the afternoon of July 28, taken to a money machine and made to reveal a PIN so his captors could withdraw and steal his money. Alleged co-offender Maera Elizabeth Todd, 39, of Whangarei, is also on remand in custody awaiting an appearance in Christchurch, where she is also alleged to have been involved in the aggravated robbery of an elderly couple on August 14.
