The mayor of hastings (Mr Ian Simson) appeared before Mr R W Dyer SM at the magistrate­s court yesterday charged with leaving his motor car standing in a borough street unlighted after sunset. Defendant said he left his car outside the theatre whilst he attended a public meeting within and the lights were then burning. When he returned the lights were switched off and he was certain they had been switched off during his absence by some mischievou­s person. His worship accepted Mr Simson’s statement and he was convicted and discharged.

A man who appeared before the Military Service board at Wellington on Tuesday stated that he was now so short of staff that he head to engage a girl as an “office boy”.
