Music to remember the art of song and mark armistice
CONCORD STRINGS CONCERT
Music by Mozart, Haydn and Elgar feature in the concert by Concord Strings, conductor Vincent James with piano soloist Colleen RaeGerrard, in the Magdalinos Room of the Havelock North Function Centre, Te Mata Rd, Havelock North at 2.30pm Sunday, November 11. Included on the programme will be Serenade Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and the Piano Sonata in A K331 by Mozart, Chanson de Matin and Chanson de Nuit by Elgar, and the Piano Concerto in D by Haydn, with soloist Colleen Rae-Gerrard. Rae-Gerrard has had a distinguished career as concert pianist, accompanist, and forte piano specialist, with broadcasts for Radio New Zealand including piano concertos with the NZ Symphony Orchestra. On returning to New Zealand after study in Europe with Paul Badura-Skoda on a QEII Arts Council scholarship, Rae-Gerrard continued to perform extensively with eminent singers — Anthea Moller, Malvina Major — and instrumentalists including violinists Yury Gezentsvey and Ronald Woodcock. As a concert pianist and accompanist, Rae-Gerrard has presented concerts in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Estonia, UK and Europe. From 1992-2005 she was a lecturer, accompanist and repetiteur at the Australian National University School of Music in Canberra. After living in Hawke’s Bay for a period where she was director of music at St Matthew’s Anglican Church in Hastings and on the committee of the New Zealand Summer Singing School, she returned to Canberra where she continues to teach and give concerts. AROUND THE PIANO CONCERT
Enjoy music at noon, today, Wednesday at the monthly Around the Piano concert in the Havelock North Function Centre. On the programme will be items from wellknown former Hawke’s Bay resident, pianist Colleen Rae-Gerard, back here from Canberra, Australia. In addition there will be items from soprano Jess Burke and solo pianist Finn Clarke. Free admission. Light buffet luncheon will be available after the concert — $10
ARMISTICE DAY CENTENARY WITH HASTINGS MUSIC SOCIETY
Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice at the end of World War I, this month’s Hastings Music Society Concert in St Matthew’s Church, Hastings, at 2pm on Sunday, November 11, will have special significance. Included in the programme will be items with a connection to that conflict. THE ART OF SONG
The Old Dairy Factory at Norsewood is the venue for The Art of Song at 8pm on Saturday, November 17, featuring Hawke’s Bay singers — soprano Giselle Clements, tenor Patrick Power and bass-baritone Joe Christensen, with piano accompanist David Selfe. “In the days before YouTube and TV, people would gather after dinner to listen to music in a salon,” says Art of Song promoter David Selfe. “This is a salon concert with some new commissioned music and includes O Soave Fanciulla from Puccini’s La Boheme, La ci darem la Mano from Don Giovanni by Mozart.” Tickets $20.
