Bay Fish & Game chairman stays on

Bruce Bates will continue as chairman for Hawke’s Bay Fish & Game after its New Zealand council meeting on Tuesday night.

An investigation into council members — which does not include any newly elected members — is currently being conducted. Council member Kevin Williams said he hoped the investigation would conclude by Christmas, but said that was highly unlikely.

It’s understood the investigation centred around the actions of Bates and councillor Jeff Niblett.

It is said to involve alleged conflicts of interest and breaches of the Wildlife Act.

Williams earlier said he couldn’t comment on the audit but claimed it would be “business as usual” as far as the public, hunters and anglers were concerned.
