Last school days for Year 13s

-

Well, the end is near for our senior students, especially our Year 13s who head out into the big, wide world, after their NCEA examinations that is!

The final achievers’ assembly was a bittersweet moment of pride, joy and sadness as our Year 13s said goodbye to the school and staff who have housed their education for the last five years.

Jordyn Lowe and Josh Prince presented their valedictory speeches, reflecting on their time at DHS and imparting wise words on their peers, to work hard, achieve and try new things. Following on from this assembly was the annual Leavers’ Dinner. A huge thank you to the staff, especially Charlie Menzies, who had the staff tying flax flowers all week to prepare the tables, the chef Joy Raffaelli and her helpers in the kitchen, and all the other staff and volunteers who helped make this evening a success. Guest speaker Will Wallace was a familiar face, having visited Dannevirke High School earlier this year, and of course being an old boy of the school. It was wonderful to hear him speak of his successes and encourage our Year 13s to work hard for theirs.

Don’t be surprised if you see staff members down at New World in the coming weeks. We will be helping to sell raffle tickets for trailers of firewood. These raffles will be sold to help fund the much needed renovation of the staffroom, which does not come under any Ministry property funding. We will be so pleased to have updated lighting, paint and carpet which is threadbare in some places. So if you see us at New World or around the community with raffle tickets, keep in mind the cold Dannevirke winter, a good time to start planning to stack the woodshed.

On Tuesday November 6, Tararua REAP, the Toy Library and Dannevirke High School worked together to bring to the youngest members of our community the Let’s Move It initiative.

Fifty six children of five years and under enjoyed the activities set up in the DHS gymnasium. The children were able to explore a new environment and challenge themselves to new experiences. It was wonderful to see the fun the children were having, and even a few adults who showed their skills on the gymnastics equipment.

Thank you to all of the organisers involved in such a wonderful initiative.

There would have been some tired children in the afternoon, and most likely caregivers, too.

For the remainder of the year our DHS juniors will be participating in a number of important events at school.

There will be a number of days testing in some classes, as well as inter-house events and activity week. Year 10 camp week will be here before we know it, also.
