Shoppers snap up bargains

- Christine McKay

The rain held off and a blustery wind didn’t deter shoppers from attending Totara College’s annual garden and craft expo last Saturday.

And while there were a couple of empty stall-holder spaces, there was plenty to draw wallets from people’s pockets at a vast array of stalls, with a queue forming at the gate before opening at 10am.

New exhibitor woodworker Denise Marshall has lived in Dannevirke for just three months and she’s loving it.

“I wish I’d come here years ago. This is the way people should live,” she said.

Denise has been working with wood for 25 years.

“I learnt the craft in Lincolnshire in the United Kingdom where, as a volunteer, I learned to carve. Volunteers made a piece for their community,” she said. “I’ve been hooked ever since.”

Denise is hoping to run classes in Dannevirke.

“It’s simple to have a go and it’s about building confidence,” she said.

Despite a lower turnout, Totara College raised $7000 from the expo.
