Create good kai, learn te reo names for plants

- Hanui Lawrence

There are plenty of opportunities for all to learn to speak Te Reo. Even some of us oldies (kauma¯tua) are taking part each week with Puti Puti Munro at Waipatu, learning Te Ataarangi.

Earlier this month, most of our class attended Te Ataarangi Hui Whanui ki Parihaka papakainga. About 450 people attended from all over New Zealand as well as a contingent from Melbourne and a few from Rapanui.

Tutors and students both young and old spent a few hours, sharing knowledge during this weekend.

The hau kainga hosted us beautifully.

We were well fed, taught through waiata, actions, laughter and Te Reo. Relatives were discovered, strangers became friends, memories were shared, language was learned, old acquaintances renewed and the history of Parihaka was told to us. A wonderful feeling of peace and reverence permeated throughout our short stay.

The Ataarangi songs we sang repeatedly were soft, sweet and melodious.

At Aunty’s Garden, lessons have been enhanced through learning to cook Ma¯ori kai and setting seed beds for planting out.

On my many walks in the Mara, I find myself naming the vegetables in Te Reo. There is a great variety of vegetables in the Mara, so I try to create recipes from what is growing there.

The potatoes are becoming ready

so our recipe for this month is

Potato, Spinach and Broadbean Salad. Recipe:
