8 in­jured as vans col­lide

Eight peo­ple were in­jured in a crash be­tween two vans in South Auck­land yes­ter­day. Po­lice said four of the in­jured were chil­dren, aged be­tween 6 and 13. One child was sent to Auck­land’s Star­ship Hos­pi­tal via he­li­copter in a crit­i­cal con­di­tion. An­other pa­tient, in a se­ri­ous con­di­tion, was also taken to Star­ship via he­li­copter. Two other chil­dren were in a mod­er­ate con­di­tion. Four adults were also treated for mod­er­ate in­juries. Se­nior Sergeant Dave Read­ings said ini­tial in­quiries in­di­cated some of the oc­cu­pants from one of the vans were not wear­ing seat­belts. One per­son in a mod­er­ate con­di­tion was trans­ferred via am­bu­lance to a lo­cal med­i­cal cen­tre. The ac­ci­dent hap­pened at 11.25am at the in­ter­sec­tion of Gun Club and Sch­laepfer Rds.
