Eighteen babies were born at the McHardy Maternity home during January, making a total of 130 since the opening of the home. Sir James Allen has received from General Pau a gift of £400 to be distribute­d at Sir James Allen’s discretion to the widows and orphans of some of those New Zealand heroes who gave their lives in the cause of the Allies.

Freezing works are to be establishe­d at Opua Bay of Islands and the Marine Department is being urged to remove a shoal in the harbour there and thus remove a source of danger to ocean going vessels. Two lifesaving reels have recently been procured and placed on the Waimarama Beach. The members of the Napier Life Saving Society will proceed there next Sunday and will give a demonstrat­ion of life saving on the beach during the afternoon.
