Hawke's Bay Today
Schools go green
Two Hawke’s Bay schools are among 30 from around the country now able to kick-start their sustainability projects thanks to $25,000 of grants awarded by Countdown. Poukawa School and Puketapu School were awarded the money through the Growing for Good grant which aims to help primary and intermediate schools fund a range of projects focused on protecting Aotearoa’s precious environment. Poukawa School’s project focuses on enhancing its native planting into a food forest. The planting will include worm farms, fruit trees, vege gardens, shade and shelter, medicinal plants and will aim to improve soil quality as well as encouraging cross-pollination. The students will learn about landscaping, horticulture, nursery management and project management.
