It is generally estimated that now after the war there are about two million more women than men in the United Kingdom. Lured by the congenial occupation and the tempting wages offered, a number of women have proceeded to Nelson for hop picking.

On Thursday Robert Pomeroy, employed on reclamatio­n work at Invercargi­ll, attempted to escape and was shot by a warder. The injured man was removed to the hospital where he was operated on and is doing well. Prisoner was sentenced to five years reformativ­e treatment at the Invercargi­ll Supreme Court in September. A useful invention has been placed on the market in the shape of a Ford tractor which is created by transformi­ng a Ford car.
