Mazda newcomer set to fill gap

- By Colin Smith

Mazda is gearing up to extend its CX family of SUVs from four to five model pillars and fill the one obvious gap in the size progression of its CX-3 thru CX-9 line-up.

The newcomer will be the CX30 and in spite of the move to a double-digit designation it will fit — in terms of size — between the existing CX-3 and CX-5.

The obvious name would have been CX-4, but Mazda already uses that for a China market small SUV.

Initial CX-30 details were announced at the world premiere during the Geneva Motor Show in March and Mazda New Zealand has since confirmed it will launch here next year.

Along with dimensions that fit between the existing CX-3 and CX5 models we know the CX-30 will be the second new car to emerge from Mazda’s seventh generation product cycle, based on the latest SkyActiv vehicle architecture.

It shares those fundamentals with new Mazda3 that has just gone on sale in New Zealand and there are many exterior design themes, cabin layout and control concepts shared with the new Mazda3 hatchback.

The CX-30 will also be among the first Mazda models to showcase the ground-breaking SkyActiv-X gasoline engine with Mazda’s proprietary SPCCI (Spark Plug Controlled Compression Ignition) combustion technology.

This engine introduces a unique combustion method — effectively a hybrid of free-revving petrol performance with the high-torque response of a diesel — by achieving compression ignition of an exceptionally lean air-fuel mixture. The SkyActix-X powertrain also introduces Mazda’s new 24-volt mild hybrid system for further efficiency gains.

include an overall length of 4395mm, width of 1795mm, height of 1540mm and a 2655mm wheelbase. That makes the newcomer 120mm longer than a CX-3 as well as 30mm wider and 5mm taller while the wheelbase is 95mm longer.

Measured against the CX-5 the new CX-30 will be 155mm shorter, 45mm narrower, 135mm lower but the wheelbase is only 45mm shorter.
