TRY: Flower by Kenzo Memento Limited Edition

It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since Kenzo first launched its Flower by Kenzo eau de parfum. To celebrate, the house has released its limited-edition version, paying homage to its Japanese roots by honouring Seijin no Hi (or Coming-of-Age Day), when those who have reached the age of maturity (20) will break out their most decorated kimono to celebrate their transition into adulthood. Flower by Kenzo Memento is also dressed in its best kimono — bedecked in bold red and blooming florals to symbolise prosperity and good fortune. Inside, the floral fragrance is a blend of Bulgarian rose, jamine and violet, with a warming dry down of vanilla, white musk and incense.

Be transporte­d to the bustling markets in Hai Phong with this spicy, heady blend of tuberose, orange blossom, jasmine and amber wood. The compositio­n was inspired by the summers Diptyque founder Yves Coueslant spent exploring Do Son as a child and continues to be one of the brand’s best-selling scents. One of Yves’ most treasured childhood memories includes seeing bundles of tuberose, jasmine and ylang ylang wrapped in large canna leaves at the markets, which were to be used as offerings.

“Perfume is like fashion for the nose,” the late Karl Lagerfeld famously said. This new chypre, fruity scent is a nod to Karl’s favourite Parisian neighbourh­ood, Saint-Germain-des-Pres, with its rose and jasmine-filled private gardens. For this reason, Karl set up his studio and offices on 21 Rue Saint-Guillaume. The address also inspired his modern activewear line. Zesty citrus notes of grapefruit and mandarin enliven the senses, before giving way to a floral bouquet of rose, jasmine and gardenia. Woody base notes of patchouli and sandalwood leave a velvety trail to finish. A male version of the scent is the Karl New York Mercer Street, a woody and fresh eau de toilette.
