“Dogs don’t dwell in the past. Dogs don’t stress about the future. They live in the moment. Perhaps we could learn a thing or two.”
— Written in 2020 by Charlotte Bryan, QLD, Australia on a beautiful warm autumn day. President Janis Warren welcomed the members and commented that our motto “Remember the millions of people who would make a meal on what you waste” worked in well with our roll call which was for items for the Napier Food Bank.
The official business was quickly but efficiently dealt with and arrangements made to pay the travel and accommodation for President Janis to attend the National AGM in Wellington in June, this being the centenary AGM.
The June birthday date and venue were changed as circumstances have altered and the members made changes to their programme.
Angela Maxwell gave her delegate’s report on the Northern and Hawke’s Bay Federation’s AGM held at the end of March. She detailed the day’s business and gave detailed account of guest speaker Sheryl Evan’s talk on strokes, which included the different signs to look for and to react to quickly.
Wharerangi WI won the Programme Cup and Berry Rangi, Tamatea WI, was awarded her Good Service Badge. President Janis thanked Angela for her interesting and informative report.
President Janis then introduced Maggie
Ronchi, the administrator/manager of the Napier
Food Bank, who was our guest speaker. Maggie told us how the food bank had begun and how it works with different agencies who refer clients for food parcels. Each food parcel is made up to the requirements of that family and delivered to them. Included in the parcels are booklets with basic recipes, budgeting advice, general tips and health tips, etc.
President Janis thanked Maggie and presented her with a personal gift and invited her to join us for afternoon tea. When she left Maggie took the large donation contributed by our members.
Afternoon tea was served to conclude a very interesting afternoon.

Members have been busy in the larger community. Thanks to Mary Young and Tui Franklin for participating in the Red Cross Street appeal. Taradale WI has made a submission to the Napier Community Awards nominating Gladys Mary Care home staff for a Meritorious Award. On the occasion of their 100th birthday, a card crafted by Margaret Hickin was sent together with an Art Deco book to our England link Martley WI. Mary Young and Elaine Williams represented Taradale WI at the Taradale Anzac service on April 25.
Ann Martin took the chair to give the delegate’s report from Northern and Hawke’s Bay Federation 89th AGM held on March 26. The federation represents five institutes comprising 112 members. Speaker Cheryl Evans spoke on the signs of a stroke and the need for action within the golden hour from onset.
