Outside buyers fuel brisk bidding

STORTFORD LODGE STOCK SALE: Competition for store lambs keeps prices up, Rose Harding reports

Outside buyers kept store lamb prices strong at Stortford Lodge yesterday. Some outstanding ram lambs made $160, with the second cut of them making $156.50. Buyers for the offering of more than 6000 lambs and about 750 cattle came from Hawke’s Bay, South Auckland, Manawatu¯, Rangitikei, Gisborne and Waikato.

The competition kept bidding brisk for the lambs which were of varying quality this week.

Longer-term lambs improved by more than $5 over last week.

The cattle sale also improved with only one pen passed in. Most of the offering was in very good order.

Prime sale

Ewe and lamb prices continued the strong trend of recent weeks at Monday’s sale.

Also, for the first time in many weeks, there were cattle on offer.

The quality of the ewe offering of about 760 sheep was not as consistently good as last week but prices for the best of them held up. The best of them, a pen of heavy suffolk-cross in-lamb ewes, made $192.

The lamb offering of 309 head also varied in quality. The best of them made $168, slightly down on last week.

The 61 head of cattle were all cows.
