Strong sale on back of rain, grass growth
STOCK SALE: Outside buyers also contribute to a lively market, Rose Harding reports
Good rain and grass growth meant a strong sale all round at Stortford Lodge yesterday. The strength was noticeable in the price of store ewe lambs and especially Chatham Island ewe lambs.
Chatham Island lambs are not in danger of cutting their adult teeth so are sought after by finishers with contracts to fill.
The cattle offering of more than 1200 head was made up largely of two-year-olds, of mostly top quality.
The two-year-old bulls continued to sell well in line with the past few weeks.
Outside buyers kept the market strong. They came from Waikato, Manawatu, Taihape and Gisborne as well as Hawke’s Bay.

Prime sale
The $300 mark was breached again at Monday’s sale when a heavy suffolk-cross ewe was sold. Several other pens of ewes broke the $250 mark with one pen of heavy ewes made $272.
Most of the prime lamb offering of about 710 head also sold for more than $200 with one pen of male lambs making $270.
The strong prices even made their way to the offering of 33 rams with the best of them making $163.
