History

1861 At the start of the American Civil War, Fort Sumter in South Carolina falls to Confederat­e forces. 1896 Three years after NZ becomes the first self-governing country in which all women can vote, the National Council of Women is formed in Christchur­ch, with Kate Sheppard as president.

1953 The first James Bond novel
