FACEBOOK FEEDBACK
Our story “Hawke’s Bay motels earning over $1m a year in emergency housing” drew these comments on Facebook:
● Robyn Coombs At the beginning of last year we were trying to find a nights accomodation for a person and were surprised to find all the motels in Hastings were being used for emergency housing. Finally found a room at the Rotten Apple Backpackers.
● Maria McKenzie If it weren’t for MSD funding the motels hundreds would have closed with no tourists for 2 years. Imagine all the job losses if that had happened?
● These people need to stay somewhere.
● Dawn Bedingfield This is terrible but the Govt is looking for easy ways out. Buying up council owned pensioner housing for half it’s worth . Tauranga city council have handed their 40 million assets over for 17million, Napier City council is on the cards to do the same.
● Jen Cabaret Thats so wrong as it’s tax payeroney that the Government is using to keep these people flithly rich while families struggle and live in flithly conditions. There needs to be some sort of enquiry into them.
● Kaz Vanderpols Can’t blame the motels, it’s the person paying the bill that’s the problem. The Labour Government.
● Fayze Jus Yup sounds about right I have over 10 thousand I owe to winz from 6yrs ago frm stayn in and out of motels. This should be covered by govt because of there lack of houses.
● Craig White The whole housing problem started with governments allowing a massive influx of immigration, before covid, up to 70 thousand immigrants were arriving in the country, in order to qualify you must have some sort of skill, or qualifications, they bought houses.
● Tracey Hall It would be cheaper for WINZ to up their accommodation allowance so people could live in a HOME there are heaps of restrictions put on people living in emergency accommodation. When will they learn that giving a little more will save them SOOOOO much.
● Denise Gore What happens when covid finally ends and the tourists come back? There won’t be enough accommodation for them.
● Jjan H Loggerz Gotta remember Government aren’t allowed to make profits off this housing crisis and she cannot buy houses and rent them out.
● Wayne Magee And the whole reason we don’t stay in hotels or motels anymore.
● Derek Mackay-Irwin Here’s the Government paying $1200 a room now the rest of the landlords w see others are making $1200 a week and call this the new normal and go and put their’s up to match. No wonder rent is the way it is.
