Fatal crash on the outskirts of Hastings

A person involved in a single-vehicle crash on the outskirts of Hastings has died.

Police confirmed one person died after the crash on Railway Rd South in Longlands about 7.30am on Saturday.

There was no one else in the vehicle.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is under way.

A police spokeswoman said there was no further information that could be released at this stage including the age of the deceased.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said fire services also responded to the crash site and it appeared the car had gone into a hedge.

The road was closed following the crash between Davis Rd and Longlands Rd East.

The weather on Saturday morning in Hawke’s Bay was fine with no rain on the roads.

The road toll this year in Hawke’s Bay is now three and this is the first fatality in the region since March.

It follows a fatal crash on Taihape Rd near Fernhill on March 29, and another fatal crash on Waimarama Rd near Havelock North on January 8.

The nationwide death toll on the roads this year is now 145, up from 119 for the same period last year, according to data from the Ministry of Transport.

Meanwhile, one person was seriously injured after a logging truck rolled 10 metres down a bank on a road in the Wairoa district on Friday afternoon.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman said fire services were called to the incident on Putere Rd about 12.50pm.

One person was trapped for more than an hour as crews from Wairoa arrived and had to cut the victim out.

It took about 40 minutes to free the injured occupant.

A police spokeswoman said the person was reported to be seriously injured and flown out by rescue helicopter to Hawke’s Bay Hospital.
