Tax change would stop gouging by supermarkets

-

The Government should take away all interest deductions as a taxable item from supermarket chains in New Zealand.

This will kill two birds with one stone — it will fill the Government coffers with millions, if not billions of dollars each year and it will stop these supermarket chains from gouging and making super excessive profits at the expense of the consumer. Just like they did to the landlords. Tim Claudatos

Lest we forget

I would assume that Pat Magill’s and Robin Fabish’s parents told them, when they were growing up, who the Anzacs were? And we were all taught this at school.

At the passing of these men and women over the years, the families and friends of these people take April 25 to remember them, and the stories which were passed on. The attendance at these services has indeed got bigger over the years.

Now in my 80s, I have recently given my father’s World War I naval medals to his great-great-grandson, who very proudly wore them at the dawn parade.

This day is not for our internal skirmishes and wars. This is solely for remembering only the New Zealanders and Australians.

The Anzacs. Lest we Forget.

Press hero killed

Last week, Shireen Abu Akleh was killed by the Israeli army. Shireen was born in Palestine, and an American citizen. She was shot in the face while wearing her Press jacket and helmet.

Shireen was a hero to her people and an enemy of Israel. She was 51 years old.

Since 2001, 51 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Israel. If Israel wishes to be considered a legitimate state and a member of the international community, it must stop acting like a rogue state. Ian Findlay

Napier

Pathway legacy

The Rotary Pathway Trust is to be congratulated on its vision and dedication over the 20 years it has taken to provide so many excellent pathways in and around Napier and the district.

It was good to see the photo and article in our paper on May 11 as an acknowledgement of that Trust’s work. No doubt we many users give little thought now to the pathways creation apart from the huge pleasure we get by enjoying our traffic free local environment, whether cycling or walking. They are such a compliment to Napier’s attractions and will be for the foreseeable future. A wonderful legacy from the Rotary Pathway Trust.
