STOCK SALE

-

It was a week to remember for sheep sales at Stortford Lodge this week. The sun came out and prices rose to record levels at Monday’s prime sale. Wednesday’s store sale was much the same as the strong tone continued throughout the sale.

The top three pens on Monday made $270, $271 and $272. Yesterday’s top pen made $220 for a pen of cryptorchid lambs sold by

A T Walsh, Dartmoor Rd. Several other pens cracked the $200 mark.

The good tone continued in the cattle sale where most pens sold well. Of note were 108 yearling friesian bulls from a Marumaru vendor. The top line at 277kg made $1005/head, or 362/kg.

Also notable were the 161 two-year angus steers from Ngati Pahuwera’s Rawhiti Station near Raupunga. They also sold well.

There was plenty of outside buyers for the roughly 700 cattle and 6000 sheep with buyers from Waikato, Manawatu, Gisborne and Wairarapa. Prices.—

PRIME SALE

It was a sale out of the box as price records fell at Monday’s sale.

The top price for a pen of male lambs was $272, the highest ever at Stortford Lodge. Of the 20 pens of prime lambs on offer only six failed to reach the $200 mark.

Agents put the big jump in price down to a smallish yarding and two key buyers in the market looking for stock. It is also understood a processing bottleneck has largely cleared, creating demand.

Ewe prices for a small, mostly quality, yarding were on a par with other weeks.

There were about 200 ewes and 280 lambs on offer.

Prices.—

Ewes: Slipe, good, $190 to $225; med, $150, $173; light/med, $104. Shorn, med, $145.50.

Rams: $114, $144.

Lambs: Male, $174 to $272; ewe, $162 to $201; m/s, $161 to $260. ■
