Kidney health link
A new Otago University study has found a link between low socioeconomic conditions and poor kidney health. The research shows people growing up at socioeconomic disadvantage are more likely to develop chronic kidney disease as they get older. Six per cent of the 857 participants, tracked from birth to 45, had poor kidney health. Another 36 per cent had signs of lower-than-normal function. Otago University researcher Hayley Guiney says the study highlights the need to do more to prevent the disease.
