Marewa Surgery Skin Clinic renovations completed for summer

-

It’s a pretty sure bet that if you live in Hawkes Bay, you’ve headed outdoors to enjoy the summer sun, and before you know it you’ve been sunburnt.

Marewa Surgery Skin Clinic medical director Dr Barry Leslie says “protecting yourself from the harsh Hawke’s Bay sun is so important for reducing the risk of developing skin cancer.”

“New Zealand has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world,” says Dr Leslie. “Approximately half of all New Zealanders will get some form of skin cancer in their lifetime, most of which are a direct result of sun damage to the skin.”

As one of the skin cancer doctors at

Marewa Surgery, Barry is all too aware of the risks of sun damage and skin cancer. “There are a lot of people who have grown up in or worked outdoors in the sun, and are now at risk of developing a melanoma or other skin cancer. Getting checked is so important because if melanoma is found and treated early it is very curable” Dr Leslie says.

Marewa Surgery is a dedicated skin cancer clinic and has been providing this service to the people of Hawkes Bay for many years. The clinic has recently been fully refurbished and the team is happily settling into the fresh, modern and purpose built clinical spaces. Currently there are four doctors available who all have advanced training in skin cancer assessment, diagnosis, minor surgery and other

treatments.

“We have both female and male doctors and it’s great to be able to offer this choice to our patients. We also have five Registered Nurses experienced in skin cancer and wound care working alongside us.”

All the team at Marewa Surgery are committed to quality patient care and a personalised service, with costs kept as affordable as possible.

“Many patients see us for skin checks annually, or more often as needed, so we do get to know our patients quite well too which is always nice”

No referral is needed, just phone or email the clinic to make an appointment

Marewa Surgery is an Affiliated Provider with Southern Cross Healthcare and an NIB First Choice Provider. They also work closely with all other insurance companies.

SUN SCREEN TIPS

We are commonly asked about the best sunscreen to use. We advise checking the Consumer NZ website for brands that have passed ANZ Standards and choose one that is waterproof with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. It is important the sunscreen is applied 20 minutes before going outside, and re-applied every 2 hours.
