1854: Eureka Stockade: In what is claimed by many to be the birth of Australian democracy, more than 20 goldminers at Ballarat, Victoria, are killed by state troopers in an uprising over mining licences.

1926: Detective novelist Agatha Christie mysterious­ly disappears for 11 days.

1965: The Beatles’ sixth studio album, Rubber Soul, is released in the United Kingdom by Parlophone (it is released in the US by Capitol Records three days later).

1967: A surgical team in Cape Town, South

Africa, led by Dr Christiaan Barnard perform the first human heart transplant on Louis Washkansky, who lives 18 days with the donor organ, which came from Denise Darvall, a 25-year-old bank clerk who had died in a traffic accident.

1979: Eleven people are killed in a crush of fans at Cincinnati’s Riverfront Coliseum, where the British rock group The Who was performing.

1992: The first telephone text message is sent by British engineer Neil Papworth, who transmits the greeting “Merry Christmas” from his work computer in Newbury, Berkshire, to Vodafone executive Richard Jarvis’ mobile phone.

2020: Facebook says it will start removing false claims about Covid-19 vaccines.
