House built of pods means kitchens become man-caves, within minutes.

Aprototype house on Auckland’s waterfront has given a whole new meaning to the term “changing rooms”.

Samsung’s Home Smart Home project offers the quickest renovation job around — its hinged and moveable pods provide for eyeopening makeovers in a matter of hours.

Modular components mean walls, floors and fittings can be rearranged to create a variety of spaces, such as turning a kitchen into an area suitable for a movie night with the girls, or a “man cave” for a night of sports watching.

The concept home can be continually redesigned to suit how it is being used.

The idea is to introduce people to a new way of living in homes, said Mike Cornwell, marketing director of Samsung NZ.

“This home is specifically designed to change and adapt to the way we live. These spaces can be transformed and configured to make any Kiwi occasion better.

“The walls, windows, floors and fittings can be rearranged to create completely different spaces for everything from a bustling cocktail party to a romantic candle-lit dinner.”

Cornwell said the electronics giants had collaborated with some of New Zealand’s top architects, engineers and designers to build the house. The design took into account ‘‘the constant change of our modern lives”.

Thousands of people are expected to view the “smart home” which is on display until October 21 at Wynyard Quarter, near Auckland’s Viaduct Events Centre. The homes have a 10-week off-site build process and can be assembled on-site in just a few days.

It is not just the structure that is innovative. State-of-the-art appliances will also be showcased.

These include a Crystal Blue washing machine that can be controlled using a smartphone from anywhere and a “food showcase fridge” that has an outer door option offering easy access to a family’s
