Johnson signs three-year deal with Cronulla

-

Shaun Johnson yesterday confirmed he has signed a three-year deal with the Cronulla Sharks. The former Warriors star said in a statement: “It’s been a crazy few weeks but it’s good to lock it all away.

“I can’t wait to get over here and to rip in. It’s really exciting,” Johnson said. “I want to add value where I can. The Sharks are a tough side, they know how to win and that’s what I’m excited to be a part of.”

Johnson paid a flying visit to Sydney to ink the deal yesterday. The Sharks said he would not return until the club’s first week of pre-season training following the Christmas break.

Coach Shane Flanagan said the signing of Johnson was a huge boost for the development of the club’s emerging first grade players.

“To recruit a current test half at this time of year is a massive boost to our club, the playing group, our members and fans.

“Shaun’s football talent is going to be a huge plus for our team and his experience will undoubtedly help with the development of our younger players.

“Players like Jayden [Brailey], Kyle [Flanagan] and Blayke [Brailey] are some who can only benefit from having Shaun in our team.

“And added to all of that, he has outstanding character, has done some great work in the community in New Zealand and he will also be an asset to the club off the field as well.”

Johnson walked out on the Warriors after the club informed him he was free to consider his options and refused to offer him a contract extension beyond 2019.

The Sharks were always reportedly in the front seat to snatch Johnson after the shock departure of star fullback Valentine Holmes, who has announced his intention to chase a career in the NFL.

However, Parramatta and St George Illawarra were also interested in Johnson.

His appearance with Flanagan at a North Cronulla cafe yesterday showed the Sharks were the only real option.

The Kiwi international leaves a chasm in the Warriors dressing room as the club’s former highest-profile player.

Warriors boss Cameron George said this week that senior players will have a role in deciding who fills that space.

The chief executive expected the players to bounce back quickly and hinted the leadership group would play an active part in the recruitment drive.
