PICK OF THE WEEK

Workin’ Moms Netflix

On Netflix it’s usually pretty easy to judge a new show by its preview image: if it looks really good it’d probably going to be disappointing, and if it looks bad it’s almost certainly terrible. Workin’ Moms

— I mean, just the title alone should send you running for the hills — is one of the rare exceptions to the rule. It looks and sounds horrific, I know, but trust me: it rules.

This is the kind of perfectly-weighted sitcom you thought didn’t exist any more. One that makes you laugh, sure, but also gives the heartstrings an occasional dramatic tug, and makes you text the friend you’ve insisted also watch it, to urgently ask “oh my god, are you up to the bit where . . . ?” (take your pick, there are so many bits where...).

Picked up by Netflix after initially premiering in in 2017 on Canadian TV (where it’s now up to its third season),

Workin’ Moms is written and and created by Catherine Reitman, who also stars as the main working mum, high-flying PR exec Kate. She is sort of the Carrie, because obviously you can’t have a funny TV show about a group of women and not explain it in relation to Sex and the City.

The centre of the show, and source of its funniest moment, is the mums-and-bubs support group where Kate and the others — acerbic therapist Anne, depressed real estate agent Frankie and well-meaning IT specialist Jenny — meet each week. They’re all at the stage where time’s up on the paid parental leave and the reality of expressing in a toilet cubicle on your morning tea break is about to set in.

There are so many good mum-based comedies out there already, it’s true. But who says you can’t binge them all? Just one more, at least.
