A long life
1921
June 10: Born in Corfu, the only son and fifth and final child of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, and Princess Alice of Battenberg.
1928
Is sent to the United Kingdom to further his education and lives with his maternal grandmother, Victoria Mountbatten and also his uncle George Mountbatten.
1939-45
Completes training for the Royal Navy and then serves in the Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean and the Pacific.
1946
Asks King George VI for his daughter, Elizabeth’s, hand in marriage.
1947
November 20: Marries the then Princess Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey, London. More than 200 million people listened to the ceremony on BBC radio.
1956-57
Travelled around the world aboard the newly commissioned HMY Britannia; a trip which saw him open the 1956 Olympic Games of Melbourne.
1961
Was made UK president of the World Wildlife Fund, a position he held until 1982. He became
the worldwide president in 1981.
1992
As Princess Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles broke down, he wrote to the princess about both her and her husband’s extra-marital affairs.
2011 June:
In an interview celebrating his 90th birthday he said he had “done [his] bit” and was now time to cut back on royal duties.
2013
February: Became the thirdlongest lived member of the British royal family (after Princess Alice and the the Queen Mother).
2017
August 2: Formally retires from his royal duties. British PM Theresa May thanks him for “a remarkable lifetime of service”.
2019
January 17: Escapes from a serious car crash after pulling out into traffic near the Sandringham estate. The Crown Prosecution Service opts not to prosecute as any action wouldn’t be in the public interest.
2021
January 9: Along with the Queen, is vaccinated against Covid-19 at Windsor Castle.
February 16-March 16: Hospitalised and later undergoes a procedure for a heart condition.
April 9: Dies aged 99 at Windsor Castle — just two months before what would have been his 100th birthday.
