Shot put record broken after 31 years
The record was older than he is. When Ryan Crouser broke it, “it felt like it was a huge weight lifted”. The 28-year-old who built a training ring at his home in Arkansas to stay on point during the coronavirus pandemic shattered a shot put world record yesterday that was set more than two years before he was born. On the first day of the United States Olympic trials, he heaved the sphere 23.37m to put his name in the record book and punch his ticket for Tokyo, where he’ll have a chance to defend his Olympic title next month. The previous record of 23.12m was held by Randy Barnes dating back to May 20, 1990. Tom Walsh holds the New Zealand shot put record of 22.90m.
