Kelsie Barley Photographer
You’re an architectural, interiors and travel photographer. What is it you love about each of these disciplines, and how do they intersect?
Early on in life, I discovered a love for architecture, driven by a strange emotional connection to buildings and the spaces within. Each country and culture tells its own story through design and I’ve been lucky enough to have the opportunity to explore some of the most dramatic architecture Asia has to offer. No matter the subject, the precision required to produce outstanding images remains the same.
Working closely with Rarebirds Interiors, you’ve had the chance to photograph a number of diverse kitchens (three featured in this issue). What stands out to you about their work/style?
Rarebirds always take inspiration from the space, bringing finesse and attention to detail that is second to none. Rather than imposing a copy-paste approach on their clients’ homes, they work closely with them to deliver something unique and outstanding. Inspired by the design of the home and infused with their clients’ personalities, Rarebirds excel with layers of texture and colour, whilst achieving space maximisation and spatial planning perfection.
What’s the top travel destination on your wishlist and why?
I’m eager to travel to New York City, not only for the rich historical architecture but also for many of its innovative new designs. It’s also a mecca for dining, and the chance to get lost in the city’s vast food and hospitality culture appeals to me.
Best places to eat, drink, and visit in your home town of Auckland and why?
As a lover of Japanese food, I can’t go past Ebisu in Britomart. I also really enjoy a glass of wine at The Hunting Lodge. A favourite spot to visit would be Cornwallis Beach, which is close to our home in Titirangi - so picturesque and relaxing, with great views back over the Manukau Harbour.
