Architectural enchantment

-

This is an exceptional example of the iconic Christchurch Style of architecture, and utterly unique to this city.

Designed by Danish expatriate architect, Holger Henning Hansen, it introduces a Scandinavian slant to this timeless style that that translates beautifully to a contemporary aesthetic.

Updated and renovated in 2008 by local architect, Graeme Jacobs, of Jacobs & Munro Architects, the house retains its classic original features, including raw concrete blockwork, strong roof lines with exposed materials and soaring light-filled spaces, all hallmarks of this distinctive architectural style.

Other, functional updates have included the addition of 150-millimetre roof insulation, retrofitted double glazing to the original timber windows, and the introduction of solar hot water, all of which add considerably to its comfort.

Set well back from the road for peace and privacy, the home occupies an enchanting 1,068 square metre site complete with inground swimming pool.

Landscaping by Earthwork has resulted in a choice of serene outdoor living spaces set in tranquil, leafy gardens.

This home significantly elevates everyday living with inspiring spaces, indoors and out.

A choice of living spaces includes a warm and welcoming open-plan family living and dining area overlooked by a soaring internal balcony.

The adjoining a highly specified kitchen, with bifold windows, is appointed with a wall oven, gas cooktop, pantry and appliance storage and a scullery, flows seamlessly to an expanse of sheltered decking, which includes an in-built barbecue area, and the pool.

Adjacent to the kitchen is another expanse of living space, also opening to the outdoor entertaining area, and featuring formal dining and a step-down lounge with a log-burner.

A large wine cellar is a welcome addition to a home where entertaining is likely to be frequent.

Overhead you can admire the stunning, steeply pitched ceilings accentuated with expressed Oregon timber beams.

Double doors from the dining area connect to yet another living or rumpus room, which opens to a separate courtyard to the front of the home.

The upstairs master bedroom gives you tree top views and includes a walk-in wardrobe and resort-style tiled ensuite bathroom, while four more bedrooms share a family bathroom with separate bath and shower, plus an additional downstairs shower room.

A beautifully positioned office, with serene leafy views allows your work to be checked under the beady eyes of your resident bird life.

Just moments to Avonhead Mall and the airport, its zoning for Westburn and Merrin Schools and Burnside High, adds to its undoubted value.

It’s an architectural delight and a glorious family home.
