Bianca, how would you describe your interior
aesthetic? ‘Laid-back California bohemia’. We’re storytellers – we like our life to have a narrative, which comes through in the items we choose. We have a lot of respect for primitive art, the patina that comes with time and the tradition of handmade.
Our indoor spaces easily transition into our outdoor area, which is the key to California living. A five-metre live-edge wooden dining table is central to our garden, and our mismatched chairs all live together comfortably. The teepee is a focal point for many of our visitors, who love sleeping under the stars or in our Airstream, which acts as our guest house. The front yard is landscaped so we can host friends who drive into town for weekend getaways with their campervans; we’ve had up to four on the property at once.
What would you say to someone wanting to recreate this vibe? Remember that each vignette tells a story. Bring different items together by considering contrast, texture and colour. Whether books or vinyl, bring your interests and memories to the fore. Learn about the great designers and hone your eye, then explore all the flea markets you can. It’s all about the adventure!
Do you do anything to your home to take it from summer to autumn? We usually switch the slipcovers on our furniture and change some of our accessories. Winter means darker Belgian linens, vintage American quilts and cashmere throws for guests. Summer is light canvas slipcovers, and we cover our outdoor furniture in vintage army fabric and choose textiles that look better with age and a patina, so the kids can play freely. We also have pillows and indigo throws everywhere in summer, and add lots of African wooden tables.
