What are some of your favourite aspects of this

holiday home? The concrete terraces that cut into the dunes are a favourite feature, as are the long views from the house without the neighbours being visible. We like the way the home is divided into three parts: there’s room for sleeping and bathroom facilities at both ends and the centre is shared. We also love that the shutters give the house two expressions, plus on hot summer days when the family’s at the beach, they can be locked and the patio doors left open for ventilation. How did you ensure the house wouldn’t become damp when it’s often shut up? The house is heated all year round and the owner can control this at a distance from his permanent residence.

What advantages do the skylights offer here? Skylights are a great way to get light into rooms, especially during Denmark’s dark autumns and winters. Here, the sky is always visible, even when the shutters are closed. In the evenings Mogens enjoys a sky full of stars. What are the important things for people to consider when building in a windswept

or seaside location? When building in an aggressive environment with harsh wind, heat and lots of salt in the air, it’s important to carefully consider the materials you’ll use, or you’ll spend a lot of time on maintenance. For this home, we chose cedar for the façade and shutters, and mahogany for the doors and window frames – both oily woods.

Make sure you orient the house to accommodate the sun and wind, and position outdoor rooms where they’ll be sheltered.
