Inspired by the richness of her local Waiheke Island clay and stone, unfairly talented Esther McDonald of Thea Ceramics has been doing the mahi to develop a gorgeously earthy new glaze, Hōrua. Translated, ‘Hōrua’ means ‘red ochre’ or ‘burnt kōkōwai’, a pigment that’s highly prized in te ao Māori and used for decoration and sacred traditions.
