New programmes offered at Learning Centre

- By JACQUI FERREL HLC chief executive officer

Semester 1 is in full swing at HLC.

This year in conjunction with UCOL, we have launched 10 new tertiary education programmes and it’s fantastic to see so much interest from adult learners and employers. The 200-plus Levin students and our other HLC students based in our Whanganui, Palmerston North and Lower Hutt campuses are all settling well into their studies.

Enrolments are still open for our Fees Free Youth Programmes which enable 16 to 19-year-olds to complete their NCEA qualifications and to gain skills that will help them achieve employment or higher learning.

Semester 2 also promises to bring more exciting new tertiary programmes including Tourism (Level 3), NZ Certificate in Business Administration and Technology IT (Level 4) and NZ Cert in Food and Beverage Service (Level 4). Early enrolment for these courses that start in July is strongly encouraged. These are popular, so talk to the team today.

Community participation is a strong value at HLC and all students engage in activities as part of their studies. Our professional cookery students enjoyed the International Food Festival at Solway Park where they served hundreds of meals and glasses of homemade lemonade to the masses. This type of activity gives them the opportunity to give back to community and practice the customer service and food preparation skills they have learned in class.

Our Hospitality and Professional Catering classes run a cafe´ and tuck shop which are open to the public. We have established these facilities to create an environment and setting where students can put their new skills into practice. If you are passing our Bath Street campus, please pop in to our Cafe´ from Monday to Thursday noon to 1pm where you will find lovely food and coffee at great prices. We also now have a tuck shop operating between 10am and 10.45am Monday to Thursday which sells coffee and muffins. We already have a lot of regulars who are commenting on their improving skills and service. Thank you for your support and encouragement.

Neighbours will have seen our National Certificate in Security students on patrol around their streets in the mornings and again later in the afternoons. Controlled patrols, inspections and reporting is a daily activity as part of their training. They are enjoying interacting with neighbours.

The HLC team will be out and about all year promoting courses and working with employers to develop programmes that are needed here in the Horowhenua. Whether you are thinking of studying, or you’re an employer needing a future workforce or just interested in what we are doing at HLC, please have a chat to them.
