Planning for her biggest goal yet

- By STAFF REPORTER

Just over a year ago, Nikita Roe struggled to run to the end of the street, let alone consider running more than 20km in a half marathon.

However, after daily 2km runs with the support of a coach and work colleague the Levin woman is on form to achieve her goal of becoming a half marathon runner in next month’s Great Forest Event.

Enlisting the help of a friend, Roe started with some light training.

“I couldn’t even run to the end of the street without struggling. Within a couple of months, I ran my first 10km. I was absolutely amazed at how well I had done.”

The Great Forest Run half marathon (21.1km) seemed like the perfect opportunity to run my first half marathon, she said.

In preparation, Roe has been running 2km almost every lunch break, with longer runs in the weekend and taking part in running races, duathlons and triathlons to help her get used to the feel of a big event. ‘

Physically hard at times and mentally challenging, Nikita has had plenty of support, including her Facebook page “She believed she could, so she did”.

“It gives that extra bit of motivation for me and others to follow my journey to becoming a half marathon runner.

“I may not be the fastest or fittest out there but I’ll be trying my absolute best to reach my goal of crossing that finish line.”
