NZTA explores cycleway

I’m delighted that NZTA has announced they are now exploring a dedicated Peka Peka to Otaki cycleway.

They have been responsive to feedback from many locals who want a new cycleway to connect with the Mackays to Peka Peka section that has proved so popular since it opened last month.

This is a great outcome for the community. I’ve spoken to NZTA about this issue and discussed it with Prime Minister Bill English on his recent visit where he came out and backed it.

A shared pathway will be an excellent way to connect our communities for local walkers and cyclists. NZTA is now in discussion with the Kapiti Coast District Council and will seek public feedback in May.

The Kapiti Expressway has been a huge success and is hugely popular with locals. The focus now is to ensure these benefits keep spreading north as roading improvements continue all the way to Foxton.

Cycling has really taken off in Kapiti and Horowhenua and we are fortunate to have many different cycleway options across the region.

The Kapiti initiative Stride ‘n’ Ride includes a shared pathway between Paeka¯ ka¯ riki and Waikanae while improving connections from town centres and the Mackays to Peka Peka Cycleway.

A shared path for walkers and cyclists is currently under construction on the north side of Raumati Road which will begin at the Expressway and go through to Raumati Beach village.

Horowhenua also has a number of cycleways that are well used by the community. Foxton Beach cycleway and Queen Street walkway connecting with the Trig walk are all great examples of how locals can get around the region on their bike. There is a growing interest in cycling and walking in our community and I will continue to advocate for these improvements.
