Library activities ready for the coming spring

- By DEBORAH MacDONALD Children’s Librarian

Winter holidays are well behind us and we’re now planning ahead for exciting spring activities. Our Winter Warmers programme went well in the branches, with the best completion rate we’ve had in years.

Congratulations to all those who completed the programme and we hope you were pleased with the books you received.

The Maths is Fun programme was also offered to children at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-po¯ and Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom.

While registration numbers were down the feedback from parents shows it was a fantastic programme for children and families. Comments include:

“They really enjoyed it and were excited to tell me about what they did.”

“Excellent programme, a great community initiative.”

“Fantastic for school holidays — really appreciate it being free to participate.”

“I would hope that all children attend this programme. It surely helps my children’s Maths skills.”

This year the focus was on mapping. Children were each given their own compass and activities to teach them how to use it. It was neat seeing kids making their way around the library following a map, using their compass and counting out steps. Children enjoy it so much they are probably unaware they are doing maths.

Children benefit by learning maths concepts through fun activities and games.

We’re excited to have a group of children from Levin East School coming to entertain us with a performance that won them six first-place awards at Show Quest in Wellington recently. Levin East was the only primary school competing against a number of secondary schools. Come along and see them perform: Tuesday, 28 August

Festival of Stories

Next month we will be holding our annual Festival of Stories with activities at each of the branch libraries.

The theme this year is ‘women’ however there is a children’s component to the programme and we have our very favourite entertainers — Mary Kippenberger and Peter Charlton — Jones (aka Rhubarb) coming to perform.

A full programme of events will be out soon so keep an eye on this space.
