Young bowler qualifies for 41st national final

-

Horowhenua’s Sam Anderson, 16, is one of 23 young bowlers who have qualified to play in the national final of the 41st New Zealand Indoor Bowls Junior Singles competition.

It will be held on Saturday, August 25 at the North Wellington Indoor Bowls Association Hall, Onepoto Domain, Titahi Bay, North Wellington, starting at 10am.

The defending champion is Matthew Farquhar, 17, from the Lake Taupo Club.

He is joined by five others, including Sam Anderson, in the Paterson Trophy Inter-District zone finals.

Anderson won the Silver Medal at the NZ Secondary School Pairs last year.

He was in the Northern Zone Junior Representatives 2014-2016 and last year was captain of the Southern Zone junior reps when Horowhenua was moved into the Southern Zone.

A plate event will be held for the non-qualifiers in the main championship and the winner will receive the Morrison Plate.

To qualify for the championships players must be under the age of 18 on March 1 and have won their district junior singles competition.

Twenty-three of the 35 districts in New Zealand have entered the competition.

At the conclusion of the singles tournament the Northern and Southern Zone junior teams will be named.

They will compete in the Northern versus Southern Zone competition for the McLachlan Junior Challenge Trophy that was won by the Northern Zone last year.
