Cellist, singer play club

This Friday Levin Folk Music Club is hosting Vic Manuel, singer/songwriter and cellist Ruby Mae Solly from Wellington for the monthly concert.

The concert starts at 7.30pm with a blackboard open mic followed by supper, with the guests performing at about 9pm. Admission is $10 public, $5 for members.

Born in 1953 in England of Irish parents, Vic and his family then moved to Australia where Vic played flugelhorn in the school band and taught himself guitar. He started writing his own songs at 16 and toured the east coast of Australia and Tasmania for many years, moving to America in 1999 where he played with guitarist Eric Schoenberg. Vic has recorded five albums and various EPs, and is frequently found entertaini­ng in Wellington and participat­ing in community projects.

Performing with him is Ruby Mae Solly, a Nga¯ i Tahu musician and writer who is the first person to graduate from the New Zealand School of Music with a degree in jazz cello.

She has featured as a cellist on many recordings and has performed live with Whirimako Black, the Wellington Internatio­nal Ukulele Orchestra, the Troubles and the Frontliner­s. Ruby currently plays both cello and double bass in a range of Wellington ensembles while completing a Masters in music therapy.
