Solve that reading crisis

- By WENDY FRASER Library services manager

Have you ever found yourself in a reading slump? When you pick up five books in a row and they just don’t spark your interest. Or you are too tired from a busy day. Or you simply can’t decide on what to read next. How do you beat the dreaded reading slump? I usually pick up a favourite author, either as a reread or their latest book. Or I be a bit adventurous and change up my genre and read outside of my comfort zone.

One of my go to authors in times of a reading crisis is J. D. Robb, aka Nora Roberts. In her persona as J. D. Robb she writes futuristic police procedurals with a splash of romance. This week Robb’s 47th novel in the In Death series, Leverage in Death hits the shelves and I can’t wait to read it. Robb has a magic touch when it comes to her In Death series and though you might think after 47 novels and numerous novellas the series would get tired, it hasn’t yet. I am looking forward to a ripping Sunday read as Robb is always a guaranteed page turner.

I read most genres, so changing it up is fairly easy. Reading children’s stories is a fantastic way to be entertained and keep your reading mojo. For the first time this year I read the fabulous Harry Potter series — I cannot believe I waited so long to read it. There are many other great series and stories in the children’s section, such as the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, the Story thieves by James Riley, or a recent favourite of mine, Wings of fire by Tui T. Sutherland. If you want to read something with a little more depth to the story, try out Refugee by Alan Gratz. Refugee is about Mahmoud, who is a Syrian boy in 2015.

The great thing about libraries is you are spoilt for choice and at Libraries Horowhenua you are only limited by your imagination and your ability to carry your books home! So why not come in and grab something outside your genre.
