Cafe targeted by burglars twice in two days

Horowhenua Chronicle - - NEWS -

Two burglaries, just two days apart, have hit a popular cafe.

Salt and Pepper Cafe, south of Levin, was targeted on Sunday, October 7 and Tuesday, October 9. Owners Stewart and Evania Wimms were dismayed at the break-ins, which forced them to lose several days of trading to allow for police inspections and insurance paperwork.

The couple — a young family who have been working hard to build the business they are passionate about — have beefed up security measures considerably at the cafe.

The owners of the property, which is also home to a garden centre and the Benniks egg shop, have done the same.

Luckily, only a relatively small amount of cash was taken in the thefts. The second time, a computerised till was thrown to the floor and the drawer forced.

A police spokesperson said they had received reports of the two burglaries and carried out scene examinations. They were awaiting forensic results.
