have some FUN
Designing a home that’s full of fun may be easier than you think. From carefully selected paint colours to exciting additions like indoor hammocks, there are numerous ways to create a vibrant home.
Whether you’ve got children or are simply young at heart, you may love some of these ideas for a fun-filled house.
Remember to weigh up trends with your personal preferences when completing interior renovations, though. You might take a measured approach and create a joyful kids’ playroom while leaving the rest of your home with a neutral, minimalist feel. It’s entirely up to you how many of these ideas you want to embrace, so follow your instincts and go as wild or as tame as you like.
Monkey time
If the thought of swinging in a hammock appeals, why not put the wheels in motion to make this happen in your own home?
Not only are hammocks suited to the outdoors, rigged up between two large trees, they can also be fitted inside. You’ll need to have the appropriate hooks to ensure the hammock can bear a child or adult’s weight, of course.
Indoor hammocks are a good way to add a bit of fun to your home, without being entirely impractical. They offer a space to relax, read a book or even take a few phone calls in comfort.
Little chefs
Are your little ones fans of food and cooking? You can create a great kitchen environment by adding a smaller bench, which kids can use to help prepare meals. Perhaps you enjoy baking — if so, this is something that children can always get involved in!
From rolling out pastry to whisking eggs and making salads, kids will love being able to get involved, without struggling to reach the regular kitchen bench.
This could require significant renovations or you could simply add a small table to the kitchen, complete with a container of cooking tools that are safe for children to use. Children may enjoy picking their favourite paint colour and giving the table a going-over with some wide brushes. They might appreciate the likes of Resene Shooting Star or Resene Snap.
Luxury theatre
If you’re a big movie fan or the kids like curling up with the latest blockbuster, consider creating an at-home theatre.
You can use your existing television screen — a particularly good choice if you already own one of the large flat-screen variety. Or you can invest in a projector and sound system to create an even more authentic home theatre experience.
Add plush seats, rugs and a heater or heat pump to keep things cosy in this space. Don’t forget the addition of a large, open cupboard that’s stacked high with cosy blankets to snuggle up beneath.
While you might be hesitant to paint other areas of the house bright shades, you could afford to take a bit more liberty in your home theatre, with red, blue or yellow stripes on an ink black or shale background. Or opt for all walls in deep grey, such as Resene Foundry, or midnight blue, such as Resene Indian Ink. Remember to add red or navy velvet floorlength curtains to top the experience off.
Outdoor joy
It’s not just common living spaces that can embrace a fun vibe. Have you considered adding a bit of colour to your garden as well?
Half-dipped terracotta flower pots add a fresh vibe to your backyard, not to mention your front garden. Pick fun paint shades like Resene Pirate Gold, Resene Blossom or Resene Shinto to paint these pots with. Remember to coat them in Resene Terracotta Sealer to seal the surface inside and out before you add the colour.
Fill them with native grasses, lush succulents or perennials, depending on your personal tastes. Line your front porch with these charming pots or dot them haphazardly around your backyard. Be sure to get the kids involved too — they’ll love being able to contribute.
