Have your say on seniors’ services

Horowhenua Chronicle - - SPORT -

Ka¯ piti and Horowhenua are proving a popular place for retirement.

We have the highest number¯of over 65 year olds proportionally in the Otaki electorate across all of New Zealand.

Because of this both Ka¯ piti and Horowhenua District Councils have a real focus on services for the elderly. A mild climate, growing local economy, with good access to services means we are an attractive place to retire to.

I know that health services, law and order, superannuation and transport are some of the important central Government issues that elderly are concerned about.

We are all living longer and because of this New Zealand has an aging population. National knows how important it is that we care for our elderly and want older New Zealanders to live enjoyable and meaningful lives. With 70,000 Kiwis are living with dementia today, by 2050 it will be over 170,000. We need to make sure there is an expanding range of care support for the elderly.

We’re also concerned for the elderly who are struggling with the rising cost of living with petrol prices and taxes often cited as a big concern.

So if you’re over 65 and can spare a couple of minutes on your computer please give us some feedback at national.org.nz/haveyoursay on issues you are facing.

We have only 18 months until the general election and we need to have policies that have a genuine focus on seniors in our community.

The Ka¯ piti Expressway has taken traffic off local roads, which has helped older drivers feel more confident driving around Paraparaumu and Waikanae.

I also know access to doctors in Levin is a constant cause of frustration for many.

I value your survey input as we can’t solely design policy ideas in Wellington without feedback or ideas from those who are in the know.
